Her speech recognition, the model, and her voice all run on the board inside the box. Nothing you say to her goes anywhere. Turn the Wi-Fi off; she keeps answering.

Turn a knob, she changes

Five knobs and two faders set how she behaves: Bestie to Mentor, Goofy to Academic, Mellow to Full Moxie, and the age of the person she is talking to. Nothing to type. She says the change aloud.

She remembers your family

Names, the towns, the recipes, last week's fractions. It lives in plain folders on the device that you can open in a file manager. Tutor for a kid, companion for a grandparent, a second mind for you.

Who made her

I waited a couple of years for someone to build the obvious thing: a small, private intelligence that lives in your house and answers only to you. Nobody did, so I built her.

Kalea is made by a small team in Arizona and is part of the OpenKalea project. She is an experiment, and open source means open to change. Read the thinking behind her →

Questions people ask first

The core experience runs on the device itself — her brain, her speech recognition, and her voice are all on-board. Family history and learning memory stay local; they don't have to leave the device. We don't run ads and we don't sell data. The claim is architectural, not a policy you have to take on faith.

Different goal. Kalea isn't competing to be the biggest brain on Earth — she's the right brain for the person in the room. In tutoring and companionship, continuity and trust beat raw leaderboard rank. She can also hedge quality by running several small models and letting a fast one pick the best answer.

Safety is built in and age-aware, running on-device: under-18 protections for sensitive topics, gentle correction over harsh refusal, and a parent in the loop. We're candid that a young child can't fact-check, so we designed Kalea as a learning companion with a caregiver involved — not an unsupervised authority. The safety page →

No to both for the core experience. Kalea is built to be useful off-grid. When you want to configure her or message her without the internet, off-grid messaging lets you do it from a nearby phone over Bluetooth. Wi-Fi is opt-in, for software updates and better models to trade up to.
