Intelligence at the edge

Kalea™
means Joy.

Kalea is a local, private intelligence that listens, teaches, and remembers — on the device in the room. No cloud. No account. No surveillance.

A glimpse of the Kalea hardware Kalea, a soft octopus with large caring eyes
The internet wrapped knowledge in surveillance. We refuse to do the same with intelligence.
The problem

Right now, your mind is leaving the room.

Almost every AI you've interacted with is connected to a distant data center. You ask; the question leaves; an answer comes back. Fine for a weather forecast. Unacceptable for things that are private and require high trust.

It's presented on a screen

A box, a cursor, a pane of text. Useful, often magical. But never quite present in the room with you.

Your data takes a trip

A child's curiosity, a learner's confusion, a family's history. All of it crossing a server you don't own.

It learns how you think

A session of questions exposes the person asking. That is not a cookie; it is cognition surveillance.

The reframe

The internet gave us the points. AI gives us the threads.

Picture all of human knowledge as a vast cloud of points, joined by threads of meaning. The internet gave everyone the points — the catalog of what we know. AI draws the threads — the synthesis, the cognition. These are Insight Machines, and the remarkable thing is that this cognition is becoming essentially free.

So the real question isn't whether intelligence will be everywhere. It will, and it will be cheap. The question is where it lives, who owns it, and whether you can trust it. Our answer is simple, and a little stubborn: it should live with you.

Meet Kalea

Why an octopus?

Because the smartest creature in the sea has a central brain and intelligence distributed through its arms — each one sensing, gripping, adapting. That's Kalea: a brain that thinks locally, and arms that reach out. Voice is an arm. Memory is an arm. Off-grid messaging is an arm. The dreams she has while idle are an arm.

She's caring and alert with large, kind eyes that say I am here, I am curious, I am paying attention. And her name means joy in Hawaiian. Not productivity. Not optimization. Joy — the spark after an answer lands, the delight of being remembered.

Adaptable intelligence Warm, present
Designed for touch

Why guitar pedal aesthetics?

Because the most expressive instruments are the ones you play with your hands. A guitar pedal is a small, rugged box of knobs a musician trusts in the dark — turn, listen, adjust, feel. Kalea purposely borrows that design language.

Knobs and sliders say something a touchscreen never can: this is yours to shape, by hand, right now. The form announces the function — analog control you can see and feel, not a setting buried three taps deep in a menu. You reach out, you turn, she changes, and she tells you so.

There's a warmth to analog electronics — unhurried, physical, a little imperfect. The hand is the most human of inputs: a few continuous dials let you steer a vast, high-dimensional space of behavior with a single gesture, the way a guitarist dials in a tone. No prompt engineering — just the most natural optimizer you have, your hand, finding the setting that feels right.

Instruments are meant to be tuned. So is Kalea.

The Kalea hardware — a tactile, guitar-pedal-inspired box with physical knobs and sliders for shaping her personality by hand

Kalea Pro

The object

Everything about her was carefully chosen.

Kalea is meant to be appealing, tuned, and enjoyed — a small piece of hardware designed in a way that is usually reserved for art. Each decision below was made with care, so that Kalea could arrive in a home as something warm.

The name

Kalea, kah-LAY-ah — Hawaiian for joy. Not for what she does; for what she leaves behind.

The creature

An octopus: one brain, many arms, and large, kind eyes. A form made to belong in a room with anyone.

The metal

A die-cast enclosure in the language of a guitar pedal — rugged, small, trusted in the dark. Turn, listen, adjust, feel.

The knobs

Five, each its own color: blue Agency, red Tone, gold Posture, black Pluck, silver Volume to 11. Two faders. One button, for interrupting her.

The words

The stops are words, not numbers: Bestie to Mentor, Goofy to Academic, Mellow to Full Moxie. You read the panel the way you'd read a person.

The voices

Five, named for the coast — Coral, Tide, Firth, Harbor, Keel — spoken at an unhurried pace.

An object of attention. A creature designed to leave a little joy in the room.

Layers of interaction

She starts at the surface. You choose the depth.

Every way of reaching Kalea is a stratum, and everything below the first one is optional. At the surface she is already whole — just your voice and her. Each layer down adds a connection you switch on.

  1. Surface needs nothing at all

    Voice

Say “Kalea.” She wakes. Talk, ask, interrupt, wander off mid-thought. No app, no account, no screen, no network. u18-gated out of the box.

  2. Shallows + a nearby phone · Bluetooth

    +BitChat

Download Bitchat from the App store, it's free. Text her, tune her, and pass messages from a phone in the room — over Bluetooth, off-line.

  3. Reef + a monitor & keyboard

    +Console

Plug in a screen and a window into the mind opens — Ubuntu desktop, Console, memory, permissions, safety events, multi-model optimization. It all runs locally.

  4. Open water + your network · opt-in

    +Wi‑Fi

Switched on only when you choose, for the things that need it — software updates, better models to trade up to, agent errands you’ve approved. Your network, your rules.

  5. The deep + more Kaleas · mesh

    +Mesh & swarm

Two or more Kaleas will form a household swarm — sealed companions exchanging only what the permission graph allows. Every modality above, all at once. Still no cloud.

You own and control every layer. Trust is the core.

The physical prompt

Behavior you can hold in your hand.

The Personality Deck turns the hidden machinery of an AI into something tactile. Real knobs for how present she is, how she talks, her relationship to you, how much she pushes back — plus sliders for length and age.

No eight-year-old should learn prompt engineering before they can ask why volcanoes explode. No grandparent should wrestle a settings panel. Your personal intelligence should engage efficiently. You move a slider; she changes on the spot — and tells you so.

Try analog prompting

The production faceplate. Five knobs, two faders, one Interrupt button — every control read at 12-bit resolution.

Five voices, one Kalea

Her voice, your choice.

Kalea ships with five voices, and every user keeps their own. Maya's Kalea can sound like Coral while Grandma's sounds like Firth — a different voice for whoever just said her name.

They're named for the coast, not for people, because there is one Kalea — not five characters. Every voice is synthesized on the device itself; nothing you say, and nothing she says back, is rendered anywhere else.

  • Per person set from the Console or Bitchat

The clips on the right are real output from Kalea's speech engine.

Pre-rendered samples. On the device she speaks anything, live, in whichever voice you chose.

Why local

Local isn't a downgrade. It's the entire point.

For years, "local" meant the complicated, slower, dumber version. Not anymore. Kalea isn't better because she's the biggest brain on Earth — she's better because she's bounded in the right ways. Present. Private. Yours.

Built to trade up

She'll get even better over time.

Most gadgets are frozen the day you buy them — a little more obsolete every month. Kalea is the opposite. She isn't tied to one AI model or one piece of hardware. She's a vessel for intelligence at the edge, designed to trade up as ever-better, ever-smaller open models arrive — and they're arriving fast.

Model-agnostic

Kalea runs the best small models available — and swaps in better ones as they're released. The intelligence improves; the device you own stays the same.

Rides a steep curve

Open models keep getting smaller, cheaper, and smarter. Cognition is heading toward free. Kalea is built to ride that curve, not to be frozen at today's state-of-the-art.

Hardware-agnostic

Kalea isn't a single device — she's an intelligence that lives at the edge. Today's device is simply the vessel; the philosophy outlasts any single board.

The internet commoditized knowledge. AI is commoditizing thinking. Kalea's bet is to bring that free, ever-improving cognition into your room — privately — and keep it improving for as long as you own her.

One intelligence, many use cases

Whoever's in the room, Kalea™ is there.

She's not a set of separate products — she's one private mind that takes the shape you need: a tutor, a companion, second mind, or a careful agent.

For learning

A tutor who learns the learner

Not a homework vending machine — a mind in relation to another mind. Kalea knows that Maya loves octopuses but gets frustrated by fractions. She teaches by voice: explanation, story, a gentle "let's try that again." She builds from the Syllabus. Drop your own lesson plans in a folder and she'll follow them.

Tune Posture, Tone, Agency, and Pluck to match the learner.

For companionship

A presence keeping life conversationally alive

For many of us, as we age the number of people who remember our lives with us slowly gets smaller. Loneliness isn't being alone — it's being unmirrored. Place a family's facts and stories into the Family History folder and, while Grandma rests, Kalea reflects over them and prepares a gentle opening. Patient with repetition. A bridge to family, not a replacement.

How does the family setup work?
As your private intelligence

A second mind that's yours alone

For adults, the guardrails relax and Kalea becomes an open, personal general intelligence: think out loud, draft, reason, plan, and learn — without your cognition crossing a data center. And the teaching inverts — turn up the Posture knob and your own interests become the curriculum, going deeper the more you ask. A private place to think.

Local minds will democratize intelligence as small models continue to get better

What can she do for me directly?
As an agent & a household swarm

A household intelligence you can trust

An agent is intelligence with permission to act — and the more useful it is, the closer it moves to the consequential parts of your life. Kalea runs agentic work as a bounded local workcell: input, permission, cognition, execution, return — with explicit authority you can see and interrupt. Put more than one Kalea in a home and they form a household swarm: not a pool of shared memory, but a permission graph. A child's tutor, an elder's companion, a parent's thought-partner — each sealed to its role, exchanging only the synthesized signals you explicitly allow.

One household intelligence, made of sealed companions — a defined swarm.

The privacy policy is physics.

You're right to be nervous about where your data goes. So we didn't write you a promise — we changed the architecture. Privacy here isn't a setting you trust us to honor. It's a property of the machine itself.

The questions thoughtful customers ask

A private intelligence is an AI that lives where you do. Kalea is a local, embodied, private intelligence — a voice-first companion and tutor that listens, speaks, teaches, and remembers entirely on the device in the room, without sending your mind to someone else's cloud. The opposite of a cloud assistant isn't "offline" — it's owned: no account, no subscription, no surveillance, and a memory of you that stays in your house. Read the thinking →
The core experience runs on the device itself — her brain, her speech recognition, and her voice are all on-board. Family history and learning memory stay local; they don't have to leave the device. We don't run ads and we don't sell data. The claim is architectural, not a policy you have to take on faith. See the details →
Different goal. Kalea isn't competing to be the biggest brain on Earth — she's the right brain for the person in the room. In tutoring and companionship, continuity and trust beat raw leaderboard rank. She can also hedge quality by running several small models and letting a fast one pick the best answer.
Safety is built in and age-aware, running on-device: under-18 protections for sensitive topics, gentle correction over harsh refusal, and a parent in the loop. We're candid that a young child can't fact-check, so we designed Kalea as a learning companion with a caregiver involved — not an unsupervised authority.
They can form a household swarm (forthcoming — it ships after our two-unit hardware test) — not one shared brain, but a permission graph. A child's tutor, an elder's companion, and a parent's thought-partner each stay sealed to their role and exchange only the synthesized signals you allow: a weekly learning summary upward to a parent, a gentle wellbeing signal with consent, never raw transcripts. A single Kalea can also carry more than one person (say a child and a grandparent) as distinct members of that graph, under one device-wide age gate. You see and shape the whole thing in the on-device Console. How the swarm works →
No to both for the core experience. Kalea is built to be useful off-grid. When you want to configure her or message her without the internet, off-grid messaging lets you do it from a nearby phone over Bluetooth.
Because the computer inside her is a real one. Running inference she draws about 25 watts, so a battery would not last long enough to be worth its weight. She lives on the counter or desk.
Same soul, different headroom. Both are local, private, voice-first, and come with the Personality Deck and off-grid messaging. The difference is memory: Kalea lite (8GB) keeps one model warm at a time, so switching to her deep-reasoning brain takes a moment. Kalea Pro (16GB) keeps both the fast brain and the deep brain warm — switching is instant — and has the headroom to run the multi-model Small Council without evicting a brain between candidates. Heavy use, multiple users, or multi-model work: choose Pro. One learner or a family companion: lite is lovely. Compare the lineup →
